The Spirit of Excellence

Message notes

Reflect on the Word.

Explore the spirit of excellence, integrity and wholehearted work with Pastor Dr. Dideolu Olufelo-Adewale at Covenant Ways Church in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent.

What does a spirit of excellence look like in ordinary life? In this message from 4 October 2026, Pastor Dr. Dideolu Olufelo-Adewale calls the Covenant Ways Church family to bring intention and integrity to our work, relationships and daily responsibilities.

Daniel 6:3–4 offers an example of an excellent spirit expressed through trustworthy character. Excellence is not perfectionism or simply achieving something impressive. It is a consistent choice to nurture the gifts and opportunities we have, with God's help, and to do what is right rather than cut corners.

The message describes excellence as an inside job: it begins in private thoughts, hidden choices and commitments that others may never see. Colossians 3:23 places this in the context of doing our work wholeheartedly unto the Lord, including when honest choices come at a cost.

Proverbs 24:11–12 prompts reflection on responsibility towards other people. Faith should be visible in the care we take, the promises we keep and our willingness to be accountable. The sermon also encourages contentment and wise priorities instead of pursuing constant activity to impress others.

Prayer closes the main message with a request that our work, speech and attitude reflect excellence. A separate closing reflection, beginning at 17:06, reinforces doing right even when it costs, building relationships and practising kindness. This week's invitation is to choose one everyday responsibility and approach it with renewed faithfulness.

Key reflections

  • Which everyday responsibility could you approach with greater intention this week?
  • What does integrity look like when no one is watching or checking?
  • How could doing your work unto the Lord change your attitude towards a difficult task?
  • Where could contentment and better priorities replace pressure to impress?
